The Buzzcocks (1979)

My favorite band used to be a 70's punk/pop band - The Buzzcocks.  The Fine Young Cannibals covered their song "Ever Fallen in Love", netting the forgotten Buzzcocks an unexpected payday.  The money allowed them to quit their day jobs, and get the band back together for a tour.  That 1989 Chicago concert was a once in a lifetime show.  It's the only event I've ever attended that lived up to its hype.

The real story, however, was the opening band.  The bass player spent half of their set trying to tune her bass.  The singer had trouble staying in key.  The songs were boring and poorly executed.  Having lost interest, the audience began to taunt them.  Already blazed, the funny looking Asian guitarist drank himself deeper into oblivion.  The band's stage presence slipped into freefall.

And then it happened.  The single saddest thing I've ever witnessed on a stage.  The singer, looking like a confused, lost little boy, looked at the audience and said in a wobbly voice, "Support your local bands, dudes".  The crowd stood stunned.  It was as if everyone suddenly felt sorry for the band.  Later the band joined the audience once the Buzzcocks hit the stage.  Nobody talked to them.  I still remember feeling sorry for the bass player.  She stood alone in a corner, looking miserable.

I guess they figured out a few things after that night.  It's hard to feel much pity for them anymore.  They went on to record a couple of great songs.  You may have heard of them...The Smashing Pumpkins.

Oh.My.God...Thinking back, I should have guessed who you were talking about, but the point I'm getting to is you have lead an interesting, amazing, worthwhile life and you're not even done yet.

You saw The Smashing Pumpkins before they were anything. And while I admit like any sane person, I would have written them off after a performance like that knowing what we all know now I would have loved, loved, loved to see them back then. After Garbage, they're one of my favorite bands in that they're one of the only bands who havent concocted a song I didnt like.

I like sooooooo many bands and feel lucky to be alive in the same time and presence as Depeche Mode (speaking of them, I cant tell you how relieved I am their lastest work didnt suck), Cure and many others but Smashing Pumpkins...from Chicago and all, but I'm proud of that unlike Fallout Boy...

I realize I'm probably rambling at this point, it's been kind of a boring night and I took some shots...but yeah.`Wow. I'm just in disbelief, or no, with your life I'm sure it happened, but wow. So I guess I'm in awe.

I admire your life man.I'm already 19 on my way to 20...I'm so far off from everything I want to see, be, experience and do and I have no idea how to get there...or I do, its just hard getting there. I want to experience something already. I like to read your site a lot because its a great life to vicariously live.

Congratulations Mr.Neill, on a life well lived. You have actual stories in your site, I just have bull shit. But honestly, you inspire me and motivate me to aim higher, be better and have some stories of my own to tell.

Ok, its getting corny? and gone on long enough.Sorry if the comment is just nonsense, I mean it though you know?

LMAO!!!! When you said "funny looking Asian guitarist", I KNEW you were talking about James Ito and the Pumpkins. "Sad little boy" confirmed it!

I like the Pumpkins enough to have purchased their greatest hits CD ("Tonight, Tonight" is classic), but I'm not surprised they garnered that reaction. Fame is all about being at the right place at the right time, eh?
